Coach development
Support for your coach education through our development funds
Do you want to become a better coach for your student sports team, or do you know of someone in your club who could be a good coach, but the costs are high?
NSI can help you or your club along the way with financial support!
You can apply for support for the costs of coaching education.
We provide funding for coaching education organized by other sports federations.
This means that if you want to sign up for a coaching course under the auspices of your sport’s federation, you can apply for support for this from NSI.
The support applies to participation in various referee and coaching courses, participation in courses and certifications under the auspices of other federations/sports councils and participation in safety courses, lifesaving courses, CPR courses and the like.
For example, support has been provided for climbing courses for climbing coaches!
In the application, it is important to indicate which course you would like to attend and what costs will be incurred.
A budget must be attached to the application, as well as a receipt after completion of the measure.
NSI does not allocate funds for courses or certifications that have already been completed, so you must apply for funding before the measure takes place.
Otherwise, the same guidelines apply as for development funds.
More information about support for coach education can be found here.
Take coaching education through the Norwegian Sports Coaching Pathway
Trenerløypa is a common framework for coach development in Norwegian sport.
With the help of the Coaching Pathway, Norwegian sport wants coaches at all levels to have the opportunity to continuously improve and further develop their own skills, so that they can better facilitate good activity in the clubs.
NIF is responsible for further developing and updating the Coaching Pathway, while the various federations in the respective sports own and manage their own coaching education and are responsible for basic education and continuing education.
The coaching pathway consists of four levels, divided according to the sporting, pedagogical and organizational competencies it is desirable for coaches to have after completing their coaching education:
Level 1: Learning and participation
The coach must be able to teach basic technical skills, as well as develop physical, psychological and social qualities for athletes at entry level.
It is also crucial to be able to take care of the athletes’ needs in a social, exciting and safe environment.
Level 2: Participation and development
The coach should have a holistic understanding of the training process and also take care of the athletes’ needs in a social, exciting and safe environment.
Level 3: Development and performance
The coach should have the competence to analyze, reflect and use practice and theory relevant to the best possible performance development for tomorrow’s top athletes.
Level 4: Performance and elite sport
The coach must have the competence to further develop athletes who are at the highest national and international level.
If you want more information about your sport’s Coach-1 course, you must therefore go to the respective federations’ websites and find out when they arrange courses!
For more information about the coaching program, you can visit NIF’s website here.
Get certified through the Trainer Certificate
The coaching certificate takes you through the most important tasks and expectations placed on you as a coach.
The coaching certificate will give you a good starting point for success as a coach, so that the athletes meet a more comprehensive quality offer regardless of coach, sport or club.
The Coaching Certificate is a simple and digital review of the most important tasks for coaches in Norwegian sport.
The aim of the Coaching Certificate is to give all coaches in Norwegian sport a common starting point for creating a good and safe activity.
The aim is also to make it easier and clearer to understand what the most important tasks are for the coach, and to gather and make available basic information, knowledge and tools for the coach.
At the 2021 Sports Parliament, it was decided that the Coaching Certificate will be mandatory for all coaches.
Take the test now!
Once you have completed the Coaching Certificate, your expertise will be visible on your sports CV, and you will have access to specialist material and tips from some of Norway’s best coaches and athletes.
More info about the Coaching Certificate can be found here.
The coaching certificate is currently available in two versions – one for coaches in children’s sports and one for coaches in youth sports.
More information about the Coaching Certificate for young adults/adults will be available at the end of 2021!

The Norwegian Sports Confederation has several different e-learning courses that are part of the Coaching Pathway.

There are several myths and misconceptions about eating disorders and it is therefore important to understand what eating disorders are and know the different main types. The material has been prepared by Sunn Idrett. Linn-Kristin Riegelhuth Kore is a former professional handball player and project manager for e-learning for coaches. She believes that the coach's role is important when it comes to the athletes' relationship with food and nutrition, both on and off the court. Food enjoyment and having a healthy relationship with food is an important topic. One example she gives: "2004 European Championships - We've won the semi-final and are getting ready for a final. We arrive at the hotel and the entire support team has prepared tacos for everyone (...). This was one of the factors why we won the gold the next day."
Para sports
This course will give you an introduction and knowledge of how para-sport is organized in Norway. You will acquire knowledge about how to facilitate and adapt for activity and about various activity aids for para athletes. Emphasis will be placed on attitudes and the opportunities that people with disabilities have in Norwegian sport.
